Hand-Blown Glass Collection

Egg

A glow with no edges, in hand-blown glass, on tables from Sydney to the desert.

The Egg is one of NEOZ's oldest and most quietly recognisable designs, in production since 1998. A single hand-blown glass form holds a warm LED at its centre, glowing omnidirectionally with no visible bulb, base or wire. Rated to IP64 and offered in two finishes, the Egg is as comfortable on a dining table as it is on a stone wall, a poolside ledge or a desert table under the open sky.

One form, two glass finishes

The Egg is offered in two hand-blown glass treatments. The Original is sandblasted to an even frosted finish. The Fritted variant is hand-painted with white glass frits before firing, so each lamp emerges different.

The Design Story

Designed in 1998, still glowing on the same tables

The Egg was designed in 1998 by Peter Ellis, Tammy Chiew and Gabriel Tam, and is one of the oldest pieces in the NEOZ range. The brief was as simple as the form: a hand-blown glass lamp that hides its mechanism entirely and reads as a glowing object rather than a lit one. Twenty-seven years on, it does the same job, in the same shape, with the same patience.

The Egg has always been built for the alfresco life. Rated to IP64 and weighted to hold its own in wind, it sits as comfortably on a stone wall or a poolside ledge as it does on a dining table. You will find it lighting Tali Wiru Dining under the stars at Uluru, on the tables at Otto in Brisbane, at the Shangri-La Kowloon in Hong Kong, and at Gordon Ramsay Burger in Busan.

In 2003, Peter Ellis added a second variant. The Egg Fritted retains the same form but introduces hand-painted white glass frits, fired into the surface to create a textured, marbled pattern. Each Fritted lamp emerges from the kiln slightly different from the next, with its own pattern of light and shade.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Hand-blown, sandblasted, fritted by hand

Every Egg starts as a single piece of molten glass, hand-blown into the same egg form that has defined the design since 1998. Each lamp is individually crafted, with the subtle variations in thickness and curvature that hand-blowing always leaves behind.

The Egg Original is finished by sandblasting the outer surface to an even frosted matte, which softens the LED into a uniform glow with no visible hot spot. The Egg Fritted takes a different path. While the glass is still warm, a glass artisan hand-paints a pattern of crushed white frit onto the surface, which is then fired again so the frit fuses permanently into the glass. The result is a textured, marbled finish that catches the light unevenly across the form. No two Fritted lamps are alike. Both finishes are paired with the warm 2600K LED as standard or the 1800K candle option, and both are rated to IP64 for indoor and outdoor use. The N1 Light Engine is fully serviceable and replaceable.
