Stainless Steel Collection

Collins

A frosted acrylic column of light beneath a brushed stainless steel top, offered in two heights.

The Collins is a cordless table lamp built around an acrylic diffuser and a brushed stainless steel top, designed by Peter Ellis in 1999. It throws a clean, even column of warm light without a visible shade, which is what has kept it in rotation across hospitality rooms around the world for more than two decades. Offered in two heights, the full-size Collins and the more compact Little Collins, it suits both formal dining tables and tighter bar settings.

Two heights, one form

Collins is offered in two sizes. The full-height Collins pairs a brushed stainless steel top with a matching steel base. The Little Collins keeps the brushed steel top and sits it on a compact polymer base.

The Design Story

Drawn in 1999, still on the same tables today

Collins was designed by Peter Ellis in 1999, which makes it one of the earliest pieces in the NEOZ range and one of the longest-serving designs we still build today. The form is reduced to its essentials: a brushed stainless steel top, an acrylic diffuser, and a brushed steel base, with a warm LED hidden inside the column. There is no fabric shade, no visible bulb, and no hot spot. The light reads as a column rather than a point.

That simplicity is why the lamp has spent the last two and a half decades on tables at Rockpool in Sydney, Voyages at Ayers Rock, Jumeirah Emirates Towers in Dubai, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and Conrad Rangali Island in the Maldives. It is easy to clean, easy to carry, easy to specify at scale, and rated to IP64 so it holds its own in poolside, terrace and indoor-outdoor settings as well as the formal dining room. It sits as comfortably on white linen as it does on dark stone or polished timber, and reads the same from every angle on the table.

The Little Collins keeps the brushed steel top and the acrylic diffuser, swaps the steel base for a more compact polymer one, and brings the whole lamp down to a lower stance for tighter bar settings and smaller tables.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Brushed steel and acrylic, built for service

The Collins is built from materials chosen for working rooms, used confidently and at their full strength. The top is machined from stainless steel and finished with a soft brushed grain that hides fingerprints and wear better than a mirror polish would. The diffuser is a frosted acrylic cylinder, engineered to refract the warm LED into a soft, even glow across the full height of the lamp. The base on the full-size Collins is brushed steel to match the top, giving the lamp a uniform metal frame top and bottom.

Each material is chosen for service. Stainless steel resists tarnish and wipes clean. Acrylic is far more impact-resistant than glass would be in the same role, which matters in a lamp that gets carried, stacked and reset thousands of times. The lamp is rated to IP64, protecting it from dust ingress and dripping water, so it holds up in outdoor and indoor-outdoor settings as well as the dining room. The N1 Light Engine sits beneath the diffuser and is fully serviceable and replaceable. The Little Collins shares the same brushed steel top and acrylic diffuser, with the steel base replaced by a compact polymer one for a lower, lighter stance.
