Solid Resin Collection

Gem Resin

Cast by hand from solid resin, in opal or amber, since 2000.

The Gem Resin is a cordless table lamp poured by hand from solid polyester resin in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. Designed in 2000 in collaboration with Australian design house Dinosaur Designs, it has been made the same way for twenty-five years: hand-cast, hand-polished, and finished one piece at a time. Available in two forms, round and square, and two colours, opal and amber.

Two forms, two colours

The Gem is offered in a round and a square form, each available in opal or amber resin. The opal glows soft white. The amber reads closer to embers.

The Design Story

Cast and polished by hand in the Blue Mountains

The Gem Resin was designed in 2000 in collaboration with Dinosaur Designs, the Australian design house known internationally for their work in solid resin. The brief was to translate the studio's signature material into something that held its own as a lit object: a small, weighty, glowing form that worked at table height without needing a shade, a wire or a visible bulb.

Twenty-five years on, every Gem Resin is still made by hand in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, by resin maker Brad Allen-Waters. Each lamp is cast from solid polyester resin, then hand-polished to a soft satin finish. The opal variant glows a clean, even white. The amber variant, lit from within, reads closer to a coal or an ember than a lamp.

Rated to IP64 and weighted to stay put in coastal breeze, the Gem has found its strongest audience in beachfront and terrace settings. You will find it at the Amanyara beach club in Turks and Caicos, on the cliffside dining terrace at the Four Seasons Santa Barbara, at Hilton Istanbul Bomonti, on the tables at The RuMa Hotel and Residences in Kuala Lumpur, and across the Ayers Rock Resort in central Australia.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Solid polyester resin, cast and polished by hand

Resin is a different material to light through than glass. It is solid rather than hollow, so the LED has to travel through the full thickness of the piece, and the light comes out softer for it: more diffuse, less directional, closer in character to a candle than a bulb. Each Gem is poured into a hand-built mould, left to cure, then released and finished by hand. Brad Allen-Waters works the surface through progressively finer grits until it reaches the smooth, satin finish that NEOZ specifies.

The opal resin is tinted to glow a clean, even white. The amber is tinted to read warm and honeyed when lit, holding its colour even on the lowest dimmer setting. Both are paired with the warm 2600K LED as standard or the 1800K candle option. Each lamp is rated to IP64 for indoor and outdoor use, and the N1 Light Engine is fully serviceable and replaceable like every NEOZ lamp.
