The Bellingen is a cordless table lamp turned from solid Australian camphor laurel, hand-finished and paired with a choice of five handmade shades. Each base carries its own grain, colour and figure, drawn from a sustainable hardwood sourced locally from the Bellingen Shire in New South Wales. The result is a quiet, tactile piece of lighting for dining tables, lounges and residential rooms where warmth and atmosphere matter most.

The Design Story

Turned from a single piece of New South Wales hardwood

Bellingen was designed in 2021 by Peter Ellis and Gabriel Tam as the first all-timber lamp in the NEOZ range. The brief was to make a piece of lighting that felt as good in the hand as it looked on the table, and to do it with an Australian hardwood rather than the brass and glass that defined the rest of the catalogue.

The timber is camphor laurel, sourced locally from the Bellingen Shire in northern New South Wales. It's a regrowth hardwood with delicate layers of honey colour, a strong grain and a faint camphor fragrance that lingers in the workshop. Each base is turned from a single piece and finished by hand with a natural satin oil, leaving the surface water-repellent and dirt-resistant for working environments.

Bellingen is in service in rooms that share its quiet, tactile character: the Elizabeth Hotel in Sydney, Crest Club at Madeline Hotel in Colorado, Ristorante Loren in Dubai, and La Rocca di Castelfalfi in Tuscany. Indoors or under cover, on linen or stone, it brings the warmth of the timber into the light.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Camphor laurel, turned and oiled by hand

Camphor laurel is a dense, close-grained Australian hardwood with deep honey and chocolate tones that shift across the same piece. We source it from the Bellingen Shire in northern New South Wales, where it grows abundantly. Each base is turned from a single block, sanded back through progressive grits and finished with a natural satin oil that draws out the grain without sealing it under a film. The result is a surface that feels alive to the touch: warm, smooth, and water and dirt resistant by virtue of the oil rather than a synthetic coating.

The base accepts a choice of five handmade shades. Two are sewn from cotton for a soft, diffused glow. Three are hand-blown in coloured or frosted glass, fluted to refract the warm LED into facets of light. Both shade families deliver a clear downward pool and a soft sidelight, and either can be swapped to recast the lamp for a different room.
